Non-alcoholic steatosis (NAFLD) is characterised by an abnormal accumulation of triglycerides in at least 5% of hepatocytes. It is strongly linked to the epidemics of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

If left untreated, the accumulation of triglycerides in the liver (NAFLD) can progress to non-alcoholic steatosis hepatitis (NASH), which in turn can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.
